How Hitler wrecked Germany

The German economy in the 1930s was performing well, with factory production having doubled between 1928 and 1935. There was a dynamic young government, and many new jobs were created every day. Many people opposed Hitler and his policies, but they were easily outnumbered. Germany had a higher living standard than most countries at the time. In 1932, the economy suddenly collapsed with the stock market crash. There were no signs at all of this happening. Millions lost their savings, and jobs were lost overnight. Many people became homeless and ended up on the streets. The government was forced to spend billions of Deutschmarks to bail out banks, insurance companies, and businesses that went bankrupt overnight. This happened just as Hitler was gaining control on the streets of Germany with his thugs known as Gestapo (Secret State Police).

Germany’s economy was still recovering from World War I and had been struck by the Great Depression. A man called Adolph Hitler (1889-1945) of the Nazi Party became Chancellor in January 1933, when President Paul Von Hindenburg (1847-1934) died after ruling Germany for 13 years. Many people opposed Hitler and his policies, but they were outnumbered by the millions of unemployed people who supported him.

Hitler’s leading supporters were industrialists, prominent businessmen, and the military, giving him money and following his orders. They gave him a chance to destroy Germany in return for making them rich again. Hitler had promised to eliminate trade unions, workers’ rights, and the political parties that threatened their power. Hitler formed the Nazi Party in 1922 in an attempt to gain power legally. He was arrested three times for his political activities, but he was released shortly after being detained each time. In 1931, elections were held in Germany.
