Is solar energy being embraced globally? Yes and no. Global solar power production has doubled every three years since the year 2000, and there are now more than 100 gigawatts of photovoltaic (PV) capacity installed around the world. But that’s still a tiny amount when compared with the two terawatts of total electricity generation capacity that we see today. Suppose you look at the solar figures in context with the rest of the electricity generating capacity. In that case, it’s clear that solar energy still has a long way to go before it becomes a substantial component of our global energy mix.
Need help with your Science assignment?
We can help!
For your science homework assignment, do a given experiment and report on it in an essay. I know it can be challenging to find time for science projects like this when you have so many other responsibilities. Take some time this week and check out our website on how you can get help with your science projects and reports. The more detail you include in the question you submit to our writers, the clearer they will know how to proceed with experiments and homework at large. Let us know if we can help out with any questions.
Leading countries worldwide in solar energy production
Watts for All? Not Yet!
While China, Japan, and Germany have led the world in PV installations by adding an average of 7 gigawatts of capacity year-in, year-out since 2006, their total PV installations are less than 0.8% of total worldwide electricity generation. And as a consequence, their PV systems are still generating an insignificant amount of electricity: Japan’s 10 gigawatts is just 0.7% of their total electricity generation, and Germany’s 12 gigawatts is 0.9% of the country’s total power output.
Solar Energy in the US
Even the US is off to a slow start when it comes to incorporating solar power into its grid. The US generated an impressive 8 gigawatts of solar power in 2013, but that’s just 0.5% of total US electricity generation. While this is up from just 0.2% only four years ago, it still lags far behind Germany and Japan, which produce 0.9% and 0.7%, respectively, of their total electricity from solar power.
